This study examines the meanings of Iman (faith) and Islam in the Qur’an through the interpretive perspectives of Muhammad Asad and Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The research aims to explore how these two prominent Qur’anic commentators conceptualize the relationship between faith, submission, and religious identity within the Qur’anic framework. This study uses a qualitative library research design with a descriptive-analytical method and a thematic (maudhu’i) approach. The primary sources are The Message of the Qur’an by Muhammad Asad and The Holy Qur’an by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, while secondary sources include scholarly books, journal articles, and other academic works relevant to Qur’anic interpretation and Islamic theology. The findings show that Iman in the Qur’an represents an internal dimension of belief that involves sincere conviction in God, supported by rational understanding and expressed through righteous deeds. Faith is not limited to verbal declaration but includes moral commitment and ethical action. In contrast, Islam refers to the external dimension of submission, defined as a conscious and voluntary surrender to the will of God, demonstrated through obedience, good conduct, and adherence to divine guidance. Both Asad and Yusuf Ali emphasize that Islam, in its essential meaning, transcends formal religious affiliation and reflects a universal principle of submission to God. Furthermore, their interpretations highlight the ethical and inclusive nature of Qur’anic teachings, particularly in promoting tolerance, moral responsibility, and respect for religious diversity. The relationship between Iman and Islam is understood as complementary, where Iman represents inner belief and Islam represents its outward manifestation. This interpretive perspective contributes to a deeper understanding of Qur’anic theology and provides a relevant framework for addressing contemporary discussions on faith, religious identity, and interreligious relations in modern society.
