MAKNA DAN KONTEKS AYAT-AYAT TENTANG TOLERANSI ANTARUMAT BERAGAMA DALAM PERSPEKTIF TAFSIR MAUDHU’I

Religious diversity is an inseparable reality of contemporary society, particularly in multicultural
nations such as Indonesia, where various religious beliefs coexist within a shared social space. This
diversity presents both opportunities for social cohesion and challenges related to intolerance,
discrimination, and interreligious conflict. The Qur'an provides comprehensive guidance on fostering
harmonious relations among people of different faiths through principles of religious freedom, mutual
respect, justice, and peaceful coexistence. This study aims to analyze the meaning and contextual
interpretation of Qur'anic verses concerning interreligious tolerance using a thematic exegesis (tafsir
maudhu'i) approach. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study examines relevant
Qur'anic verses, classical and contemporary tafsir literature, and scholarly works related to religious
tolerance and multiculturalism. Primary sources include the Qur'an and major tafsir works such as Tafsir
al-Misbah, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Maraghi, and Fi Zhilal al-Qur'an, while secondary sources consist
of academic books, journal articles, and previous studies on tolerance and religious moderation. Data were
analyzed through thematic classification, contextual interpretation, and comparative analysis of exegetical
perspectives. The findings indicate that the Qur'an promotes tolerance through the principles of freedom
of belief, recognition of human diversity, peaceful dialogue, and respect for the rights of others without
compromising Islamic theological foundations. Verses such as QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:256, QS. Al-Kafirun
[109]:6, QS. Yunus [10]:99, and QS. Al-Hujurat [49]:13 collectively emphasize that religious diversity is
part of divine wisdom and should serve as a basis for constructive social interaction. The study further
reveals that Qur'anic teachings on tolerance remain highly relevant for addressing contemporary
challenges related to religious extremism, social polarization, and multicultural coexistence. Consequently,
these values contribute significantly to strengthening religious moderation, promoting interfaith harmony,
and fostering peaceful social relations in modern pluralistic societies.
